3 Ways to Save Money on Fuel

 

Let’s face it – gas prices aren’t going to come down anytime soon. In fact, they only seem to continue to soar. That doesn’t mean you have to overspend to keep your vehicle on the road. To get where you’re going safely without breaking the bank, take a look at these tips on ways you can save money at the fuel pump.

1 – Don’t Top Off Your Tank

You’ve probably heard this before, but let’s just reiterate why you shouldn’t top off the gas tank. It might seem like you’ll get those few extra miles before refilling the tank, but actually, you’re wasting those precious cents.
The ‘topped off’ gas mostly evaporates as the fuel heats to power the engine. So, rather than assuring you can make it on fumes to the next pump at the end of the tank, you’re simply pouring your money into a black hole.

2 – Keep Your Tire Pressure Up

Running with low tire pressure can have a negative effect on your fuel mileage, just like not assuring you change your oil at the proper time. When tire pressure is low, your fuel mileage suffers because the rubber of the tires have to work harder to grip the road. This excessive energy push means more fuel used to go the same distance.Research the needs of your tires. Most manufacturers make it easy to find the recommended pressure level for your selected tires. In general, most tires require at least 30 psi, so when in doubt, keep your tires filled to at least this level until you can further research the recommendations.

3 – Don’t Fill Your Tank

Wait…what? Yes, that’s correct – don’t just avoid topping off. Actually avoid filling your tank. The weight of a full tank takes a toll on fuel mileage, so trying to maintain somewhere between ¼ and ¾ of a tank will do wonders for your gas.
Of course, that last bit of gas doesn’t ever seem to go as far as the rest of the tank, either. That’s because low levels of fuel mean the car has to pump harder to get the same effect. Avoiding low levels of gas, as well as heavy full tanks, can significantly improve the distance you get out of a gallon.
